Franois-Marie Arouet, better known by the pen name Voltaire, was a French Enlightenment writer, essayist, deist and philosopher known for his wit, philosophical sport, and defense of civil liberties, including freedom of religion and the right to a fair trial. A known Freemason, he was a member of the Lodge of the Nine Sisters in Paris along with friend and fellow member Benjamin Franklin, one of the Founding Fathers of the US.
