Bras and Breasts

Bras

A quick note for the ladies about bras and bra size ... Personally, I think bras should go the way of the dinosaur or at least be fitted for comfort with a soft stretch fabric.

In case you don't already know --- last week Jockey International introduced JOCKEY Bra, based on a brand new sizing system focused on breast volume rather than the rigid cup and band measurement system currently used in the industry. Instead of the typical A, B, C, D, etc, cup, Jockey's Volumetric Fit System measures the volume and shape of a woman's breast plus an under-bust measurement, with the volumetric sizes running from 1 through to 10. The new system has 55 size combinations, and promises to address the long-bemoaned problem of ill-fitting bras. Cup sizes currently are based on two measurements - the breast at its fullest point, minus the rib cage measurement. If it's a one-inch difference, it's an A cup; a two-inch difference, a B cup, and so on. Jockey International says this equation doesn't account for volume and different breast shapes. Bra sizes also vary widely from one manufacturer to the next, and from country to country, and women's bodies and breasts often don't conform to the arbitrary sizes offered by companies. These are the problems Jockey is seeking to solve.

Breasts

Happy birthday, Angie. It's cool that you and Brad share the same color codes for hair and wardrobe. As always, you made an important statement in 2013 opening the door to breast cancer genetic testing for women around the world. It will save lives. You have always been a "rebel with a cause" and great at bringing awareness to the world. With Brad at your side - fighting Zombies in World War Z - you are both "bad ass," to quote Brad on Sunday night at the London premiere of the film. Brad owns the copyrights to a film called The Lost City of Z - about explorer Percy Fawcett, who disappeared in the jungles of Brazil in 1925, while searching for Z.

As you know Angie's mother, Marcheline_Bertrand died at age 56 from breast cancer, which is genetic. Testing allows one to decide what to do next. I know that the cost of testing, surgery, and reconstructive surgery are high, but at the very least every women should know the odds if there is any chance of dying young. Much of healing - for any disease - is about diagnosis.

BRCA1 is expressed in the cells of breast and other tissue, where it helps repair damaged DNA, or destroy cells if DNA cannot be repaired. If BRCA1 itself is damaged, damaged DNA is not repaired properly and this increases risks for cancers. The protein encoded by the BRCA1 gene combines with other tumor suppressors, DNA damage sensors, and signal transducers to form a large multi-subunit protein complex known as the BRCA1-associated genome surveillance complex (BASC). The BRCA1 protein associates with RNA polymerase II, and through the C-terminal domain, also interacts with histone deacetylase complexes. Thus, this protein plays a role in transcription, DNA repair of double-stranded breaks ubiquitination, transcriptional regulation as well as other functions.

Queen Elizabeth II

There's one more amazing woman rocking in London this week - Queen Elizabeth II.

Queen marks Coronation anniversary at Westminster Abbey   BBC - June 4, 2013
The Queen has joined 2,000 guests for a service at Westminster Abbey to mark 60 years since her Coronation. Some of those who took part in the 1953 service were among the congregation. Archbishop of Canterbury the Most Rev Justin Welby said the event honoured "60 years of commitment". The Queen was accompanied by more than 20 members of her family, including the Duke of Edinburgh, who pulled out of an engagement on Monday night because he was feeling unwell. Several key items from the Coronation were placed in Westminster Abbey for the service. They included the heavy, solid gold St Edward's Crown, displayed on the High Altar - the first time it has left the Tower of London since 1953. Beside it was the Ampulla, the gold, eagle-shaped bottle from which the holy oil was poured for the Queen's anointing. The Coronation Chair, one of the oldest pieces of English furniture still in use, was also on show.
