Over in Arizona, where my daughter Tracy lives - things as you know are going crazy before their presidential primary on Tuesday. It all seems staged to me - by those in the Republican Party who want to stop Trump allowing things to go back to the old ways - the good old boys and their games. Everyone with a grievance wanting to be part of this revolution will consider participating either pro or against Trump. There's so much frustration and anger in this country. What will things be like in the future?
Cuba will be in the news this week as a Obama visits. There's lots of reaction from Cubans who have lived in the United States for decades - dissidents hoping to go home to family - others just wanting to return for a visit - the history of the country showcasing in the news this week. Obama's arrival in Cuba tomorrow will mark the first visit by a United States president to the island since Calvin Coolidge went in 1928. His trip follows the reopening of diplomatic relations with Cuba on December 17, 2014 and various other steps taken to normalize relations - a welcome change after decades of hostility towards the Cuban government that include an ongoing economic blockade, sponsored invasions, and terrorist attacks. So far, everything seems to indicate a warm reception for Obama from most Cubans. Many of them will welcome him for taking the first steps towards righting the wrongs of past US foreign policy towards Cuba. But he is likely to be received with reservations, if not outright hostility, by pro-US right-wing dissidents on the island who have misgivings about the attempt at reconciliation with the Cuban government.
The politics of this right wing - both on the island and abroad - that has long curried the favor of Washington elites is rooted in a perspective called "Platismo." The origin of the term goes back to 1901, when the first constituent assembly of the island was forced to accept an amendment to the Cuban constitution authored by US senator Orville Platt giving the United States the legal right to intervene in the country's internal affairs. For the next thirty-three years, the United States, with the explicit support of many Cuban Platista politicians, availed itself of this license repeatedly, influencing policy under the threat of military occupation - a threat it carried out on several occasions. US hotel company Starwood has become the first American firm to agree a deal with the Cuban authorities since the revolution of 1959. Starwood will renovate and run three hotels in the Cuban capital, Havana.
The Ladies in White are a Cuban dissident group formed in 2013 by the wives of political prisoners. Some of the group's members will meet US President Barack Obama next week when he visits Cuba. The trip is the first for a US president in decades. The US government has continued to criticise the Cuban government for human rights abuses and cracking down on protest groups amid loosening of restrictions between the two countries.
