Two months ago Hurricane Sandy devastated the coastal area of Seagate, a local community, not far from my home by the foot of the Verrazano Bridge in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn.
Mike, a friend, and fellow school teacher, lived in Seagate until 2010. On this day, we returned to his former home to see what had happened in the aftermath of Sandy. Due to looting, local residents had set up their own security, as the crippled, community struggles to rebuild.
With all of the damage, this pagoda stands alone on the beach as the only survivor of the tragedy.
